Record GT field for the Island

The CAMS Australian GT Championship will have an incredible 35 entries hit the track during for the Shannons Nationals’ third round at Phillip Island.

The record number of cars is split between the CAMS Australian GT Trophy Series and CAMS Australian GT Championship with each category consisting of individual practice, qualifying and races.

Remarkably, the GT cars will be on the iconic circuit on 12 different occasions with almost nine hours of track time between the two categories across the weekend.

The trophy series will start on Friday with two practice sessions and two 15 minute qualifying sessions before completing two 50 minute races on Saturday.

With the CAMS Australian GT Championship also completing their two practice runs on Friday, qualifying for the Championship’s fourth round will begin on Saturday afternoon following the conclusion of the trophy Series.

The GT championship’s main race, which doubles as the second round of the CAMS Australian Endurance Championship, will take place on Sunday afternoon, capping off the Nationals’ third round.

With a mammoth 300 points up for grabs for the winner, the race is pivotal in determining who might top the tables at the end of the season.

Current CAMS Australian Endurance Championship leaders Max Twigg and Tony D’Alberto in WM Waste Management Mercedes-AMG GT3 will be hoping to make it three endurance race wins in a row to consolidate top spot on the standings.

Overall championship leader Liam Talbot will once again team up with John Martin, as the Porsche drivers will be confident going into the race after securing second place in the first round at The Bend Motorsport Park.

Nick Kelly currently leads the CAMS Australian GT Trophy Series after victories in the first two rounds. Phillip Island marks the halfway point and will be a decisive weekend for the series.
